Sunday Afternoon

Here are a couple of pictures I took about 2 p.m. this afternoon. This is the first fawn to run into the yard then the second one showed up. Seconds later Mama made an appearance before they all headed back into the trees.

Iowa Quilters

Most of you have probably heard about all the flooding that happened this spring in the Midwest. Iowa had almost all counties hit and hundreds of people lost everything. Gudrun Erla of GE DESIGNS is collecting quilting supplies to be given to an IOWA guild the end of August. Check out what she has to say and if you have anything you can give please do. Click on the link above and read about what is being done. We all know that quilting is great therapy.

Have you Hugged Your Washer & Dryer Today?

This was posted on one of my genaolgy lists and I thought you might enjoy reading it. When I was a child we used a wringer washer, 2 rinse tubs and the clothes line. For my brothers jeans we had wire forms that we put in the legs to create a crease. So enjoy this look at yesteryear.

RECIPE

Never thought of a 'washer' in this light before..what a blessing!'

Washing Clothes Recipe' -- imagine having a recipe for this ! ! !

Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe: I can only imagine a young bride who said to her grandma she didn't know how to wash clothes and perhaps she just wrote it down for her. This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook - with spelling errors and all.

WASHING CLOTHES

Build a fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave onehole cake of lie soap in boilin water.Sort things, make 3 piles1 pile a white,1 pile a colored,1 pile a work britches and rags.To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch. Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch. Hang old rags on fence. Spread tea towels on grass. Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

Paste this over your washer and dryer. Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and dryer, and give thanks. First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet---those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

{For you non-southerners -wrench means rinse.} AND WE THOUGHT WE HAVE IT ROUGH!

Good Afternoon

Hope you all are having a lovely summer day. It is in the 70's here in western WA and after our cold rainy spring feels very nice. I took a minute to check my email and found another new blog to explore. I have listed it in my blog list. The lady who has Decor to Adore http://decortoadore.blogspot.com/ is Laura Ingalls Gunn and she is having a giveaway on her blog. So if you have time go check her out and sign up for her give away. Also the graphic on the top right will take you to another lovely give away. Another really nice site to browse The Old Red Barn Co. Once the house is listed I think I'll give some thought to a give away here so stay tuned. Okay enough R & R and back to packing.

Early Morning

I can now show you the label for the quilt in previous posts. My husband has called her "the goomp" all her life and me the "mother unit" which prompted the kids to call him the "father unit". Now you know the history. "The Goomp" has started an online blog to do the family newsletter instead of printing one out and mailing copies to everyone. It has been very popular in the past, but with 3 teenagers and a full time job her time to do that went away. So we are giving this a try. If you like to see what the rest of the family is up to check out the Owen Newsletter listed here on the My Blog List section. If you do let me know how you like it, better yet let Margaret know how you like it. Now you've seen pictures in the past of Emma and Lucy here is a picture of Rosie my outdoor cat who is a terrific mouser. Off to bed now.

Freaky Friday

Today was an adventure. We started out this morning to go to Renton, WA to buy a Ryobi Table saw for my husband. We stopped at Taco Bell and my other half left his cell phone in the men's bathroom. Of course, we didn't notice that until we were on our way home. So when we get home I call the Taco Bell and no one had turned in the phone and they couldn't find it in the bathroom. So the next call was to Verizon to cancel that phone and start the process for a new one. Once it arrives next week I get to re-input all his phone numbers or the ones he can remember. What a chore.
On a happier note the tree quilt has been mailed back east to my daughter. Until I can figure out how to convert a pdf file to a jpeg I won't be able to show you the label.
I've discovered that Lyn at Blue Bird Quilts http://bluebirdquilts-lyn.blogspot.com/ is having a Christmas in July give away. Leave a comment on her blog and you will be entered in the drawing. Have a good weekend all.

4th of July

Happy 4th of July. I am having a quiet evening at home with the cats so they remain calm. This morning I was nicely entertained watching Lucy chase her tail. I have added a new blog you might enjoy visiting to my blog list. It is called I live on a farm. This is a short post today I am going to go put the label on Margaret's tree quilt so it will be ready to mail on Monday morning. Have a great holiday everyone.
